Broadneck Lacrosse Club
BAYS is excited to offer a year-round girls' club lacrosse program! These competitive teams play against local club teams. This opportunity allows BAYS athletes to compete at a higher level of lacrosse but at a fraction of the cost of joining a private club team. The Broadneck Lacrosse Club will field five teams for the 2024-2025 season, to include the following teams:
- 2030 (7th graders)
- 2031 (6th graders)
- 2032 Black (5th graders)
- 2032 Gold (5th and 4th graders)
- 2034 (3rd and 2nd graders)
A typical Broadneck Lacrosse Club season includes:
- Late Summer 2024: the season starts with optional pickup games and workouts
Fall 2024: 1 practice a week, scrimmages, and 2-3 tournaments
Winter 2024/2025: 3-5 skills clinics (indoor and outdoor) & optional small sided indoor games
Spring 2025: 2 practices a week and 8 games through the National Girls Lacrosse League (NGLL)
Early Summer 2025: the season ends with 2-3 summer tournaments
Why play year around lacrosse?
Playing on a year around team allows the young athlete to play with and against stronger players, therefore allowing her to more quickly advance her lacrosse skills. This increased competition and becoming part of a community that loves lacrosse allows for more team building and can be more enjoyable than playing on seasonal recreation teams. Also, being on a select team will better prepare the young lacrosse player for the competitiveness of high school lacrosse; our local high school teams are some of the best in Maryland and require a high level of play. However, year-round lacrosse is a commitment. Instead of just focusing on lacrosse in the spring, we practice once a week in the fall, have fall/summer tournaments, and participate in winter training.
How to Join the Team?
Broadneck Lacrosse Club tryouts are in July. If you have questions about tryouts or are interested in your child possibly joining the team after tryouts have concluded, please email [email protected].
Why BAYS Girls' Travel Lacrosse?
Annapolis and the surrounding areas are considered one of the most competitive lacrosse regions in the country, generating many outstanding athletes and high-caliber club teams. While we are fortunate to live in a lacrosse mecca, this can also put immense pressure on the young lacrosse player and their parents. Not wanting to "miss the boat," players and parents feel they need to join a club team as early as possible. Just a few years ago, most clubs started their programs in 4th or 5th grade. But now, many of these same programs are starting with 2nd and 3rd graders and parents are finding themselves driving their kids long distances, spending $2,500+ a year on fees/gear/travel, and being part of a large organization that prioritizes lacrosse over other sports.
BAYS has offered recreation lacrosse to the Annapolis community for over 20 years, helping to develop a multitude of high school and college lacrosse players. However, as of 2021, BAYS decided to take the next step by offering a more competitive club lacrosse option, without some of the negatives often associated with private clubs, to include:
Price: BAYS is striving to make the annual fees around $600; most club fees are around $2,500+ a year.
Convenience/Friends: There are no club teams on the Broadneck Peninsula, requiring our athletes to travel elsewhere within Anne Arundel, Baltimore, or Howard County to play competitive lacrosse. Broadneck Peninsula families now have a convenient competitive lacrosse option, decreasing practice commuting and encouraging friends to play together.
Multi-Sport Athlete: While we love lacrosse, we also recognize that playing more than one sport serves an athlete's long-term needs (i.e. - decreases injury, burnout, etc.). We encourage our players to play multiple sports as long as possible. As much as possible, Broadneck Lacrosse Club coaches strive to deconflict practice/tournament times with other BAYS coaches (i.e. - soccer, basketball, etc.) and are willing to work with individual players on their multi-sport needs.
Our Mission is Different: We are proud that BAYS is a non-profit entity, with its entire focus geared toward instilling fair play, good sportsmanship, competitive spirit, tolerance, and friendship in its players. We believe focusing on these traits will help instill long-term success in our athletes.
